Sorrento: Ancient Roman cisterns seized due to illegal restaurant use

Authorities in Sorrento have seized a section of the ancient Spasiano Roman cisterns following an investigation into the illegal occupation of public land. The operation, conducted by the Napoli Metropolitan Police and coordinated by the Public Prosecutor's Office of Torre Annunziata, targeted a site known as the 'cunicolo perimetrale delle Cisterne Basse'.

Investigators determined that the state-owned area, which is protected by cultural and archaeological restrictions, was being used without authorization as a food storage facility for two restaurants located in Piazza Tasso. These businesses, which are linked to the same company, had reportedly constructed two private access doors to allow direct entry from their premises into the cistern.

During the inspection, police also discovered a well equipped with an electric lifting pump. The suspected offenses include the invasion of land or buildings, unauthorized construction on protected heritage sites, and building without the necessary permits. The investigation is ongoing as police continue to census other potentially illegally occupied historical and cultural spaces in the area.
