Sorrento hotel assault: Moroccan man arrested for theft and sexual assault of Australian tourist

On 4 August 2026, a 37‑year‑old Moroccan man, staying irregularly in Italy, entered the room of an Australian tourist at a hotel on the Sorrento coast, claiming to be a cleaning staff member. He demanded payment of the tourist’s stay tax, then snatched her wallet and proceeded to grope her buttocks and kiss her neck.

The Carabinieri of the Sorrento station, acting on an arrest warrant issued by the Procura of Torre Annunziata, identified the suspect through CCTV footage and witness statements. He was taken into custody and is charged with aggravated theft with force and aggravated sexual violence. On 6 August 2026, the preliminary judge of the Tribunal of Torre Annunziata validated the arrest and ordered pre‑trial detention.

The incident highlights the coordinated investigative work of Italian law‑enforcement agencies and the vulnerability of tourists to opportunistic crimes.
