Sorrento Peninsula bids for Italian Capital of Culture 2030
Six municipalities across the Sorrento Peninsula—Sorrento, Massa Lubrense, Sant’Agnello, Piano di Sorrento, Meta, and Vico Equense—have announced a joint candidacy to become the ‘Capitale Italiana della Cultura 2030’. Sorrento Mayor Corrado Fattorusso presented the initiative during a meeting with Tourism Minister Gianmarco Mazzi, emphasizing a unified vision to leverage the region's historical, artistic, and literary heritage for sustainable development.
The project aims to integrate cultural innovation with environmental protection and social inclusion. However, the bid has faced criticism regarding the region's current socio-cultural challenges. Observers have noted concerns that the focus on cultural prestige may overlook pressing local issues, such as the housing crisis driven by tourism, the decline of traditional local craftsmanship, the degradation of historical sites, and persistent mobility and pollution problems.
