Sorrento Peninsula faces housing crisis and cultural preservation efforts
The Sorrento Peninsula is facing diverse social, cultural, and economic shifts. A housing crisis is emerging as residents, including elderly citizens, are increasingly forced to leave their homes due to unsustainable real estate markets and the pressures of a tourism-driven economy. Rosario Lotito, president of the ‘Io Resto’ Committee, has highlighted the human cost of these displacements.
In Sant’Agnello, local authorities are attempting to balance tourism with community identity, focusing on sustainable practices to ensure the area remains livable for residents. Meanwhile, in Sorrento, archaeological efforts are underway to preserve and display a Roman domus discovered under Piazza Veniero. The site, which contains frescoes and mosaics dating back to the 1st century AD, will eventually be integrated into a new local information point.
Additionally, ecclesiastical governance in Piano di Sorrento is seeing shifts in how parish administrators are appointed, as the Archdiocese of Sorrento-Castellammare di Stabia utilizes canon law to manage historical rights of patronage.
