Sorrento to host World Buffalo Congress in 2026

The World Buffalo Congress is returning to Italy after nearly twenty years, with the 2026 event scheduled to take place in Sorrento from October 28 to 30. The congress serves as a major international forum for researchers, veterinarians, breeders, and institutions from more than twenty countries to discuss scientific research, technological innovation, and production systems related to the buffalo species.

Organized by the University of Naples Federico II, the Consorzio di tutela della Mozzarella di Bufala Campana DOP, and the Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale del Mezzogiorno, the event has already received 283 scientific abstracts. Italy leads the scientific contributions with 82 abstracts, followed by India, Pakistan, Thailand, Brazil, the Philippines, and China.

With an estimated global population of over 220 million buffaloes, the industry is seeing significant growth and transformation across Asia, Europe, and the Americas. The congress aims to address the economic and social importance of the sector, focusing on sustainability and the valorization of quality products. Italian Agriculture Minister Francesco Lollobrigida has been invited to attend the closing sessions.
