Sorriso loses top Brazilian agricultural producer ranking

Sorriso, Mato Grosso, has lost its position as Brazil’s leading agricultural producer, being overtaken by Sapezal in Mato Grosso and São Desidério in Bahia. According to data from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), the shift is partly due to a 9.3% decrease in Sorriso’s planted area, following the creation of the new municipality of Boa Esperança do Norte, which absorbed land previously belonging to Sorriso.

In 2024, Sorriso led the ranking with a production value of R$ 7.2 billion. By 2025, while Sorriso’s production value grew to R$ 8.16 billion, it was surpassed by Sapezal, which reached R$ 8.59 billion driven by herbaceous cotton, and São Desidério, which reached R$ 8.22 billion.

Overall, Brazil’s total agricultural production value reached R$ 927.2 billion in 2025, representing an 18.4% increase compared to the previous year.
