Sorriso proposal suggests tax discounts for urban tree planting

A proposal has been suggested in Sorriso to implement a tax incentive program aimed at increasing urban tree coverage. The proposed ‘IPTU Sorriso Mais Bela e Florida’ would offer property owners discounts on their municipal property tax (IPTU) ranging from 5% to 10% for planting and maintaining approved tree species on public sidewalks in front of their properties.

The suggested discount structure would be data-driven: 5% for areas with satisfactory tree cover, 7.5% for intermediate areas, and 10% for hotter, less forested neighborhoods. This approach aligns with the National Urban Afforestation Plan, which aims to increase the proportion of residents with at least three trees near their homes to 65% by 2045.

Sorriso has previously implemented environmental tax incentives through Municipal Law No. 3.196/2021, which established the ‘IPTU Verde’. This existing program provides up to a 20% discount (capped at R$ 1,000) for residential properties that utilize solar photovoltaic energy.
