SOS Mata Atlântica Foundation celebrates 40 years of environmental preservation

The SOS Mata Atlântica Foundation is celebrating 40 years of environmental preservation efforts in Brazil. Since its establishment on September 20, 1986, the organization has focused on protecting the Atlantic Forest biome, safeguarding water resources, and promoting sustainable development.

The foundation has maintained a significant presence in the interior of São Paulo state, particularly in cities such as Barra Bonita, Lins, and Itu. Key initiatives in these regions include forest restoration, river recovery, and environmental education programs designed to engage local communities.

In Barra Bonita, the revitalization of the Tietê River serves as a major success story, linking environmental protection to economic growth through tourism and fishing. The river's recovery was supported by massive public mobilization, including a campaign that gathered over 1.2 million signatures for its decontamination. Additionally, the foundation's ‘Observando os Rios’ project utilizes volunteers to monitor water quality across more than 100 rivers within the Atlantic Forest biome.
