SOSIS sports complex undergoes restoration in Suriname

The Willebrod Axwijk Sport- and Youth Center, commonly known as SOSIS, is undergoing a comprehensive restoration process following years of neglect. The deterioration was largely attributed to a legal dispute between the state and a foundation that previously managed the facility.

Maintenance work, which has been underway for three weeks, includes mowing, pruning, and the removal of a burned-out building. Efforts are also being made to resolve long-standing water supply issues in collaboration with the Surinaamsche Waterleiding Maatschappij (SWM). The Directorate of Public Greenery and Waste Management is providing support for these physical improvements.

Despite these efforts, officials face significant challenges regarding security. Jorgienjo Orassie, head of Maintenance at the Ministry of Youth and Sports, reported that theft and vandalism are major obstacles, noting that newly installed equipment, such as water pumps, is frequently stolen shortly after installation. To combat crime and issues related to unauthorized use of the grounds, discussions are ongoing with the Ministry of Justice and Police to establish a police outpost on the premises to ensure the safety of the nine sports fields.
