Sosnowiec faces heating reserve shortage as Tauron contract expires

The expiration of a long-standing contract between EC Zagłębie Dąbrowskie (ECZD) and Tauron Ciepło on August 31 has left the city of Sosnowiec without a critical heating reserve. For 113 years, ECZD has provided up to 140 MWt to the network, serving as a vital backup during failures of other regional sources, such as the Łagisza Power Plant.

Tauron Ciepło has indicated that the absence of this supply could lead to a failure to meet quality standards and reduced thermal comfort for residents during extreme cold, specifically when temperatures drop below -15°C. Furthermore, the increased load on the remaining network during such periods raises the risk of technical failures. Despite two and a half years of negotiations, a new agreement has not been reached.
