Sotheby’s reports major auction results in Hong Kong and London
Sotheby’s has reported significant results from recent major auctions in Hong Kong and London. In Hong Kong, the Modern & Contemporary Evening Auction raised approximately $85.59 million. The sale was led by Yoshitomo Nara’s ‘Present’ (1994), which sold for $9.14 million, exceeding its low estimate by 43%. Other notable sales included Yayoi Kusama’s ‘PUMPKIN (TWPOT)’ (2010) for $7.74 million and Yu Nishimura’s ‘at night’ (2022), which sold for $293,700, significantly surpassing its estimate.
In London, Sotheby’s achieved its highest-ever sale for modern and contemporary South Asian art, totaling £19.8 million ($26.2 million). This auction set nine new artist records, including those for Rabindranath Tagore and Bhupen Khakhar. The sale featured Sayed Haider (S. H.) Raza’s ‘Paysage Rouge’ (1960), which fetched £3.8 million, nearly ten times its high estimate. The South Asian art sale reached a 99% sell-through rate, reflecting growing international demand for the category.
