Sotheby’s to auction rare Macallan 1926 whisky at Scottish estate
Sotheby’s will host its inaugural auction at The Macallan Estate in Speyside, Scotland, on October 9, featuring a rare bottle of The Macallan Fine & Rare 60 Years Old 1926 whisky. The bottle carries a high estimate of £2.2 million ($3 million) and is expected to challenge previous records for a single whisky bottle.
Distilled in 1926 and bottled in 1986 after 60 years of maturation in sherry-seasoned oak cask No. 263, only 40 bottles were drawn from this cask. The auction lot is one of the original 14 bottles to receive the ‘Fine & Rare’ label. Other versions of this whisky featured designs by artists such as Sir Peter Blake and Valerio Adami.
Jonny Fowle, Sotheby’s global head of whisky and spirits, described the event as a ‘landmark moment for the world of whisky collecting,’ noting the significance of holding the auction at the distillery where the spirit was produced.
