Sotiris Serbos resigns as foreign policy advisor to Greek Prime Minister

Sotiris Serbos, an Associate Professor of International Politics at Democritus University of Thrace, has resigned from his position as an ad hoc foreign policy advisor to Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis. The resignation was officially accepted and published in the Government Gazette on August 21, 2026.

Serbos had previously faced public distancing from the government in April after making controversial remarks regarding U.S. policy toward Iran and Donald Trump. He had suggested that U.S. efforts aimed for a ‘Venezuela 2.0’ to overthrow Ali Khamenei but resulted in a ‘North Korea 2.0,’ while also describing Trump’s actions as ‘reckless.’ Government spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis clarified at the time that such views did not represent the administration or the Prime Minister.

While some reports suggest the departure was a mutual decision following a period of professional friction, the Prime Minister’s office has not issued an official statement regarding the specific reasons for the resignation. The departure occurs amid heightened tensions in Greek-Turkish relations and developments in the Eastern Mediterranean.
