Souda Bay: Organized ring arrested for stealing fish from marine research cages

Authorities in Souda Bay have dismantled an organized ring responsible for the systematic theft and vandalism of research fish cages belonging to the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (HCMR). Two men, aged 27 and 33, were arrested by the Chania Coast Guard after being caught on security cameras approaching the facilities by boat to remove fish using nets.

The suspects reportedly stole at least 860 kilograms of fish, including sea bass and sea bream, with an estimated value exceeding 10,600 euros. During the operation, officials also seized two boats, vehicles, and 210 kilograms of fish. Authorities are also investigating the seized equipment for potential links to narcotics.

Beyond the financial loss, HCMR officials emphasized that the most significant damage is the irreparable destruction of scientific research. The vandalism and theft interrupted long-term, funded Mediterranean aquaculture studies, resulting in the loss of months of irreplaceable scientific data and observations.
