Souleymane Jules Diop defends remarks on secularism in Senegal

Former political official Souleymane Jules Diop has issued a formal response to criticisms regarding his recent statements on secularism and the financing of religious worship in Senegal. In a publication titled ‘Accusateurs, lavez-vous !’, Diop defends his position, stating that while his tone may have been harsh, he has never intended to insult anyone.

Diop addressed accusations of religious disrespect by highlighting his personal religious background, noting he attended Quranic school from age five and committed to the path of Serigne Touba at age fifteen. He clarified that his intention was to denounce the exchange of insults between religious guides and political figures, rather than attacking faith itself.

He further criticized those he claims have ‘privatized religion’ for personal gain and asserted that his disagreements with certain religious actors are rooted in political matters where he believes the interests of the people have been sidelined.
