Soulis Markopoulos, legendary Greek basketball coach, dies at 77

Soulis Markopoulos, an iconic figure in Greek basketball, has passed away at the age of 77. His death has prompted widespread mourning and condolences from major clubs, including PAOK, Aris, Iraklis, AEK, and Marousi, as well as the Hellenic Basketball Federation.

Markopoulos enjoyed a coaching career spanning five decades. He holds the record for the most appearances as a head coach in the Greek top division, with over 700 games. His most significant achievement occurred in 1994 when he led PAOK to victory in the Korac Cup, defeating Stefanel Trieste in the final.

Before transitioning to coaching in 1978, he played for clubs such as Olympios 40 Ekklisies and Diokritos. He was recognized for his tactical expertise and professional ethics, eventually being inducted into the Greek basketball Hall of Fame in 2023.
