Soundgarden reunites for NFL halftime show in Seattle

Soundgarden reunited for a special halftime performance during the Seattle Seahawks’ NFL season opener against the New England Patriots at Lumen Field. The set featured surviving members Kim Thayil, Ben Shepherd, and Matt Cameron, joined by Taylor Momsen of The Pretty Reckless on vocals and Pearl Jam’s Mike McCready on guitar. The band performed a medley of “Outshined” and “Spoonman,” the latter marking the first time the song has been played live since the death of frontman Chris Cornell in 2017.

Prior to the game, Mike McCready performed a Jimi Hendrix-inspired rendition of the U.S. national anthem. Despite the high-profile nature of the event, NBC did not broadcast the Soundgarden performance, opting instead for halftime analysis. This omission led to significant frustration among viewers on social media, who expressed disappointment that the televised broadcast missed the historic musical moment.

The reunion occurs as the band prepares for the release of a final studio album featuring vocal tracks recorded by Cornell before his passing. Following a legal agreement with his widow, the remaining members are in the process of finalizing the project.
