Sourav Ganguly wins Supreme Court relief in commercial rights dispute

The Supreme Court of India has declined to intervene in a legal dispute between former Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly and Percept Talent Management, upholding a previous ruling in favor of the cricketer.

The dispute stems from a 2003 player representation agreement regarding Ganguly’s commercial and promotional rights. Percept Talent Management had challenged a Calcutta High Court decision that upheld an arbitral award of ₹14.49 crore, plus 12 percent interest and ₹50 lakh in costs, awarded to Ganguly.

Percept argued that earnings from the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) should have been included under the revenue-sharing terms of the agreement. However, the court noted the distinction between Ganguly’s role with KKR and his promotional activities. The Calcutta High Court had previously determined that because Percept continued to represent Ganguly long after the alleged breach, the company had forfeited its right to terminate the agreement based on that specific incident.
