Source Foundry secures $400 million investment from Situational Awareness
Situational Awareness, a hedge fund founded by former OpenAI researcher Leopold Aschenbrenner, has invested $400 million in Source Foundry, a stealth startup focused on AI chip manufacturing tools. This latest injection brings the total investment from Situational Awareness in the startup to $500 million.
Founded in 2025 by Stanford University researchers Abdulmalik Obaid and Joe Burgt, Source Foundry aims to develop tools that make semiconductor manufacturing faster and more cost-effective. The company is positioned to compete in the high-stakes AI hardware supply chain, with some reports suggesting it seeks to challenge ASML in chip production equipment.
The investment comes at a volatile time for Situational Awareness, which has seen its assets decline from approximately $45 billion to $10 billion within a single month amid reports of liquidity pressure and margin calls. Despite this financial drawdown, the fund's commitment underscores the intense market appetite for AI infrastructure and semiconductor innovation.
