South Aegean tourist arrivals ELSTAT 2025 Greek tourism growth regional tourism shift

Data from the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT) show that in 2025 the South Aegean region accounted for 22.4% of all tourist arrivals to Greece and 26.8% of total overnight stays. While mature destinations such as Crete (+1.2%) and Attica (+1.5%) recorded modest growth, the South Aegean’s increase was only 0.7%.

The strongest percentage gains were recorded in regions that previously attracted fewer visitors: Peloponnese (+6.8%), Western Greece (+6.6%), Epirus (+5.9%), Thessaly (+5.6%) and Central Greece (+4.8%). Overall arrivals to hotels, campsites and short‑stay accommodations rose 2.8% to 38.2 million, and total overnight stays grew 2.2% to 156.3 million, reflecting sustained demand despite sector challenges and ongoing hotel investment projects across the country.
