South Africa agricultural exports hit record US$4.1 billion in Q2 2026

South Africa’s agricultural exports reached a record US$4.1 billion in the second quarter of 2026, marking a 10% increase compared to the same period last year. According to Wandile Sihlobo, chief economist at the Agricultural Business Chamber of South Africa, the growth was driven by higher shipment volumes, rising global prices, and improved efficiency at the Cape Town port.

A significant factor in the growth was a 56% increase in shipments to the United States compared to the first quarter of 2026, aided by a reduction in effective US tariffs from 30% to 12.5%. While the African continent remains the primary destination, accounting for 40% of shipments, the sector is seeing strong performance in citrus, corn, nuts, and various fruits.

Despite the record performance, experts warn that the sector must navigate heightened geo-economic tensions and potential risks from the El Niño weather pattern. Maintaining existing markets and diversifying trade partners are cited as essential strategies to mitigate these risks.
