South Africa beaten by Mexico in World Cup opener as coach Hugo Broos reflects on personal loss

South Africa lost 2‑0 to host nation Mexico in the opening match of the 2026 World Cup. Mexico took the lead through Julián Quiñones after a South African error, doubled it before halftime, and added a second‑half goal by Raúl Jiménez. South Africa finished the game with nine men after red cards were shown to Sphephelo Sithole and Themba Zwane. Coach Hugo Broos said the team played well early on but individual mistakes and the dismissals cost them, and he criticised one refereeing decision.

Broos also spoke about the emotional weight of the night, recalling the loss of his father and brother and noting how his children, grandchildren and other family members followed the match from Belgium. He said their support made the experience more meaningful than the result alone, highlighting his personal connection to the tournament.
