South Africa Cabinet reports rise in distressed municipalities

The South African Cabinet has reported a significant increase in distressed municipalities, with the number rising from 10 to 38. Minister in the Presidency Khumbuzo Ntshavheni stated that the government intervention will focus on improving financial viability, governance, service delivery, and institutional capacity.

On the economic front, the Cabinet welcomed the launch of Phase 3 of the Government-Business Partnership. This initiative aims to drive growth, attract investment, and create over one million jobs by 2030. Previous phases contributed to ending loadshedding and South Africa’s exit from the FATF grey list.

In public health, progress was noted regarding a new tuberculosis vaccine currently in Phase 3 trials. An agreement with the Serum Institute of India has been reached to produce these vaccines for global distribution. Additionally, Eskom reported progress in its load reduction programme, achieving load reduction status in seven provinces and restoring normal supply to approximately 1.2 million customers.
