South Africa's Bafana Bafana coaching future unsettled as SAFA denies Hugo Broos contract extension

The South African Football Association (SAFA) has refuted media reports that national team coach Hugo Broos signed a one‑year contract extension. SAFA confirmed that Broos remains under his existing contract, which runs until 31 July 2026, and that no new agreement has been signed.

Broos, who guided Bafana Bafana to a bronze medal at the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations and a successful 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign, led the side to the knockout stage at the 2026 World Cup before they were eliminated. His future became uncertain after the tournament, prompting speculation about his possible retirement.

Former club coach Pitso Mosimane said SAFA had consulted him and other experienced coaches as part of a succession plan, but he did not know the exact status of Broos’s contract. Names such as Hervé Renard have also been linked to the next appointment. SAFA said it is reviewing its long‑term options for the national team and will make a decision before Broos’s contract expires.
