South Africa coach Hugo Broos decries referee after 0-2 loss to Mexico in World Cup opener
In the opening Group A match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup at the Estadio Azteca, Mexico defeated South Africa 2‑0. South Africa were forced to finish the game with nine players after Sphephelo Sithole and Themba Zwane each received straight red cards.
South Africa coach Hugo Broos criticised the officiating, saying, "Sedikit disayangkan kami harus mengakhiri pertandingan ini dengan sembilan pemain," and questioning the second dismissal: "Untuk kartu merah pertama saya rasa tidak banyak yang perlu dikatakan. Namun, untuk kartu merah kedua, menurut saya pemain Meksiko menghalangi pemain kami."
Broos praised his squad’s effort, noting moments when Mexico struggled to find space, but identified poor ball possession as a weakness that must improve before the next group match.
