In the opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, South Africa were beaten 2‑0 by host nation Mexico. The goals came from Julián Quiñones and Raúl Jiménez.

South Africa manager Hugo Broos said his side was "disorganized" and lost the ball in dangerous zones, stressing that the team must work on its offensive play. He added that Mexico appeared "desperate" at moments but praised his players for moments of good effort.

Broos noted that the Bafana Bafana will seek redemption in their next group fixtures against the Czech Republic in Atlanta and South Korea in Monterrey.
