South Africa defeats Italy 41-29 in WXV Global Series rugby

South Africa's Springbok Women defeated Italy 41-29 in a WXV Global Series match held at the Stadio Omero Tognon in Pordenone. The victory marks South Africa's first-ever win on Italian soil.

Italy took an early lead through a try by Alyssa D’Incà, but South Africa responded with a dominant physical game, particularly through their driving mauls. Anushka Groenewald scored twice for the visitors, alongside tries from Byrhandré Dolf, Maria Tshiremba, Micke Gunter, and Logan Welman. Jakkie Cilliers provided crucial conversions and penalties throughout the match.

The Italian side, led by captain Vittoria Ostuni Minuzzi, staged a significant second-half comeback. After Italy trailed 24-12 at halftime, they scored consecutive tries from D’Incà and Ostuni Minuzzi, eventually taking a 29-27 lead with 15 minutes remaining. However, South Africa regained control with a try from Gunter and a late score from Welman to secure the win.

Italy's head coach Plinio Sciamanna noted that while the team created many opportunities, they struggled to contain the South African maul and conceded avoidable fouls. The Azzurre are scheduled to face the USA next in the series.
