South Africa deploys 510 soldiers to KwaZulu-Natal
President Cyril Ramaphosa has authorized the deployment of 510 South African National Defence Force (SANDF) soldiers to KwaZulu-Natal to assist the South African Police Service in maintaining order. The deployment, part of Operation Prosper, is scheduled to run from October 9 through November 30 at an estimated cost of approximately R34.08 million.
The military intervention follows violent anti-immigrant protests in Durban and Soweto, which included looting, vehicle fires, and the death of a foreign national. The Presidency attributed the unrest to misinformation regarding a Constitutional Court ruling, which falsely suggested the judgment granted blanket amnesty to undocumented foreign nationals. The government has clarified that the ruling does not allow for the denial of asylum access based solely on procedural grounds.
