South Africa designates 36 hospitals for Ebola preparedness

South Africa has designated 36 hospitals—comprising 24 public and 12 private facilities—to manage suspected Ebola cases. The initiative aims to isolate potential patients from general wards to prevent wider transmission. The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) is on high alert to facilitate the safe testing of suspected cases.

While no confirmed cases have been reported in South Africa, the measures follow a significant outbreak in the Congo, which recorded over 8,600 confirmed cases and 4,148 deaths by early October 2026. Because Johannesburg serves as a major African aviation hub, the preparedness plan is critical for regional travel and trade security.

Additionally, port health officials have transitioned from the Department of Health to the Border Management Authority to enhance the screening of travelers arriving from affected countries.
