South Africa marks Heritage Day with calls for unity and action against violence

South Africa is observing National Heritage Day with various cultural celebrations and significant political addresses. President Cyril Ramaphosa, speaking in Oudtshoorn, emphasized the importance of national unity and the preservation of indigenous knowledge and traditions. He highlighted the role of ‘Living Human Treasures’ in maintaining the nation's cultural tapestry.

However, the President used the occasion to address critical social issues, specifically condemning gender-based violence. He stated that the ‘abuse, rape and killing of women is not our heritage’ and described the recent discovery of nine murdered women in Ekurhuleni as a ‘national shame.’ Ramaphosa pledged to address the nation regarding government measures to combat this violence.

Across the country, the day is being marked through diverse activities, including municipal cultural nights in Eswatini, educational celebrations in KwaZulu-Natal, and poetic reflections on indigenous language and identity. Discussions have also touched upon the necessity of linking heritage to human rights, social justice, and the economic empowerment of future generations.
