South Africa faces retirement crisis amid ageing population
South Africa is facing a growing retirement crisis driven by a rapidly ageing population and insufficient savings. According to Statistics South Africa, the number of citizens aged 60 and older is projected to reach 6.6 million by 2025, up from 3.6 million in 2002.
Experts warn that traditional retirement models are outdated. Barry Kaganson, CEO of Auria Senior Living, notes that while people are living longer and healthier lives, financial planning often assumes a retirement period of only 12 to 15 years, whereas individuals may actually need to fund 30 to 35 years of life. The 10X Retirement Reality Report indicates that only 6% of South Africans are currently on track to retire comfortably.
A significant gender gap also complicates the landscape. Data from the Q2 2026 Quarterly Labour Force Survey shows that women face higher unemployment rates (37.5% compared to 30.3% for men) and lower labour force participation. These economic disparities, combined with career interruptions and greater family responsibilities, contribute to a substantial retirement wealth gap for South African women.
