South Africa faces rising unsolved murders and rural crime

South African law enforcement faces significant challenges regarding violent crime and rural security. The South African Police Service (SAPS) reported 89,893 unfinalised murder cases for the 2025/26 period, an increase from 82,796 the previous year. Parliamentary discussions highlighted that SAPS murder-conviction statistics may be misleading, as they only measure outcomes for cases that reach a court verdict rather than accounting for all reported murders.

Furthermore, the SAPS murder-detection rate fell to 9.50%, down from 10.13%, missing the 60% target. Investigative capacity is reportedly hindered by a lack of reliable vehicles, forensic support, and functioning technology.

In rural areas, crime continues to threaten agricultural production and the safety of farmers and workers. The African Farmers’ Association of South Africa (Afasa) has called for improved rural policing and stronger information-sharing networks to combat livestock theft and farm violence. Stakeholders noted that crime in these isolated regions disrupts production, damages infrastructure, and increases business costs.
