South Africa faces surge in political killings and mass shootings

South Africa is facing a surge in violent crime, characterized by both political assassinations and mass shootings. According to a report by the Global Initiative Against Transnational Organized Crime (GI-TOC) titled ‘Bullets and Ballots’, at least 43 people have been killed in suspected politically motivated attacks since the beginning of 2026. These killings, which target party officials, ward councillors, and community leaders, come just one month ahead of the municipal elections scheduled for November 4.

In a separate but related escalation of violence, the country has experienced a wave of mass shootings. Within a single week, at least 46 people were killed in multiple incidents, including an attack at a bar in Wedela that left 18 dead. Experts attribute the high fatality rates to the prevalence of illegal firearms and the influence of organized crime. While official police data indicated a recent decline in the overall homicide rate, the intensity of these recent shootings has caused significant public alarm.
