South Africa farm attack sparks rural safety debate

A brutal attack on 50-year-old farmer Donovan Marx in the North West province has reignited national discussions regarding rural safety and farm attacks in South Africa. The incident occurred on Wednesday, 28 October, on a farm located between Potchefstroom and Ventersdorp.

During the assault, Marx was shot, stabbed, and had his ears cut off. One of his farm workers was also restrained with cable ties during the ordeal. The attackers fled the scene in Marx’s red Isuzu vehicle. Marx was transported to Mediclinic in Potchefstroom for treatment.

Ian Cameron, Chairperson of Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Police, has called for focused, priority policing to address the unique characteristics of farm attacks, citing rural isolation and the severity of violence involved. Meanwhile, UFC fighter Dricus du Plessis has used social media to draw international attention to the issue, highlighting concerns over the frequency of farm murders in the country.
