South Africa food basket costs rise amid vegetable price hikes
New data indicates rising food costs in South Africa, with the average 44-item household food basket increasing to R5,488.06 in September. While staples like maize meal, rice, and sugar beans have decreased in price compared to last year, significant price hikes in vegetables and fruit—including onions (up 66%), bananas (up 23%), and tomatoes (up 18%)—are offsetting those savings.
Economic pressures are particularly acute for minimum wage earners. After accounting for essential costs like transport and electricity, a minimum wage worker is left with less than R1,800, which is insufficient to cover a nutritious diet for a family of four, estimated to require approximately R3,800 per month.
A comparison of purchasing power between South Africa and Botswana shows that many everyday food items, such as beef, chicken, and vegetables, have lower average prices in Botswana. For instance, 1kg of beef costs R128.00 in South Africa compared to approximately P68.00 in Botswana, while 1kg of onions is R24.30 in South Africa versus P17.28 in Botswana.
