South Africa food producer prices fall despite high retail costs

In South Africa, producer price inflation slowed to 5% in August, down from 5.7% in July. Notably, producer prices for food products fell by 0.6% year-on-year, with significant drops in meat and meat products (down 5.8%) and grain mill products like maize meal and flour (down 9.6%).

Despite these falling factory-gate costs, consumer food prices have not seen a corresponding broad decrease. Stats SA reported that food and non-alcoholic beverage inflation actually accelerated slightly in August. The discrepancy between lower production costs and higher retail prices is attributed to various intermediary expenses, including transport, electricity, packaging, storage, wages, and retailer costs.
