South Africa grapples with surge in fatal shootings and firearm mismanagement
South Africa is experiencing a surge in lethal gun violence, highlighted by a mass shooting in KwaMakhutha, south of Durban, which claimed 11 lives. In separate incidents in Durban, gunmen killed two teenagers and wounded three others. Gun Free South Africa (GFSA) has called on police to trace the origins of firearms and ammunition used in these crimes, noting that the presence of guns makes violence more lethal and retaliation easier.
Concerns have also been raised regarding the management of weapons within the private security sector. In the Eastern Cape, police raided a security company, seizing 140 firearms while 135 others remained unaccounted for. In Durban, a businessman was granted bail following charges related to high-calibre firearms, where police reported that 10 guns were missing from the site.
The country continues to struggle with high murder rates, often linked to gang rivalries. While the government has previously deployed the military to hotspots in Johannesburg and Cape Town to support police, violent crime remains a persistent threat. In Johannesburg, a series of killings involving ten women has prompted authorities and the Democratic Alliance to offer significant rewards for information leading to arrests.
