South Africa inflation eases to 4.3% amid rising El Niño risks

South Africa’s headline inflation eased to 4.3% in July, falling below the 4.5% consensus forecast. This decline was primarily driven by significant reductions in transport and food costs, including substantial month-over-month drops in petrol and diesel pump prices.

However, economists from Commerzbank and Momentum Group warn that this downward trend may be temporary. Analysts point to rising risks from high global crude oil prices and potential diesel supply disruptions, which could lead to price increases in September.

Furthermore, the outlook for food inflation remains uncertain due to the high probability of a strong El Niño event. Meteorologists suggest that the resulting warm and dry weather between November and March could significantly impact maize harvests, a staple food in South Africa, potentially leading to sharp increases in grain prices similar to those seen in previous years.
