South Africa intensifies crackdown on corruption and financial crime

South Africa is intensifying its crackdown on corruption and financial crime across its borders and financial systems. The Border Management Authority (BMA) reported handling 57 disciplinary cases involving fraud and misconduct in the last quarter, with 33 additional cases ongoing. BMA Commissioner Michael Masiapato noted that corruption at ports of entry often involves officials colluding to evade taxes, facilitate illicit goods, or fraudulently issue immigration documents.

Simultaneously, the government is strengthening oversight to maintain its standing with the Financial Action Task Force (FATF). The Companies and Intellectual Property Commission (CIPC) has launched an upgraded Beneficial Ownership Disclosure Module to provide law enforcement with instant access to data to combat money laundering and terrorist financing. Trade, Industry, and Competition Minister Parks Tau stated that these measures are intended to ensure the country meets international standards during its upcoming FATF Mutual Evaluation.
