South Africa intensifies security following surge in political killings
South Africa is facing an escalation in political violence as the nation prepares for the 2026 local government elections. Authorities have recorded 26 politically motivated killings this year, including the recent murders of Democratic Alliance candidate Sinovuyo Dyokwe in Cape Town and ANC councillor Sicelo Mleve in Gqeberha.
In response, the Political Killings Task Team has been reactivated to investigate these incidents. Election officials have also announced increased police visibility at voting stations, particularly in identified high-risk areas.
Experts suggest the violence is driven by competition for municipal resources, tenders, and political influence, where local government positions intersect with patronage and criminal economies. Analysts warn that without addressing underlying issues such as transparency and economic opportunity, increased policing alone may not prevent the violence from undermining public confidence in the democratic process.
