Ekurhuleni: Police investigate murders of seven women near Johannesburg
South African authorities are investigating the murders of at least seven women whose bodies were discovered east of Johannesburg over a two-month period. The victims, aged between 20 and 40, were found in the Ekurhuleni municipality, with some bodies discovered partially or fully naked and showing signs of sexual violence and physical assault.
Police are currently investigating whether the killings were the work of a single serial killer, a group of perpetrators, or copycat crimes. In one instance, five bodies were recovered within a single week. One victim, 38-year-old Elizabeth Moselakgomo, was found behind a hotel on September 12 after she disappeared while out for a jog.
President Cyril Ramaphosa has ordered an urgent investigation, directing law enforcement to prioritize these cases and ensure that no stone is left unturned. The surge in violence has caused significant fear within local communities in the Gauteng area. The incident occurs against a backdrop of high homicide rates and endemic gender-based violence in South Africa.
