South Africa launches AI humanoid robot IRIS for schools

BSG and Technologies has launched IRIS, an AI-powered humanoid robot designed to support teaching and learning in South African schools. Launched at the Dube TradePort Special Economic Zone in KwaZulu-Natal, the robot is intended to interact with students from Grade R through higher education to explain concepts, answer questions, and assist with assessments.

One key feature of IRIS is its ability to communicate in all 11 of South Africa’s official languages, as well as over 7,000 languages globally. The initiative has received support from the South African government, with Deputy Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation Nomalungelo Gina noting its potential to improve teaching and create economic opportunities. Deployment has already begun, with five schools participating in the National IRIS Lab School campaign.
