South Africa launches digital Electronic Travel Authorisation system

South Africa has officially launched its Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system, a digital platform designed to modernize the country’s immigration process. President Cyril Ramaphosa inaugurated the system at OR Tambo International Airport, stating that the reform aims to make travel to South Africa faster, simpler, and more predictable while enhancing border security.

The initial rollout of the ETA is available to eligible travelers from China, India, Indonesia, and Mexico. The system utilizes biometric verification, facial recognition, machine learning, and an upgraded electronic movement-control system to assess travelers before and during their entry. Applicants can now submit information, make payments, and receive authorizations entirely online.

Government officials view the ETA as a strategic move to increase South Africa’s competitiveness in the global economy by supporting tourism, trade, and investment. The system is intended to reduce administrative barriers for business travelers and professionals while strengthening the state's ability to manage migration and maintain border integrity. Plans are reportedly underway to expand the system to additional countries in the future.
