South Africa leads Africa in AI readiness as Nigeria faces adoption gap

The 2026 Global Outsourcing AI Readiness Index by Ataraxis reveals divergent trends in artificial intelligence adoption across African nations. South Africa has emerged as the continent's leader, ranking eighth globally among 25 major outsourcing destinations. It is the only African country to score above 50 in all four measured dimensions: population adoption, workforce literacy, enterprise adoption, and the education pipeline.

In contrast, Nigeria presents a unique paradox. While the country ranks sixth globally for workforce AI literacy, it sits only 19th for enterprise AI adoption. This 32-point gap indicates that Nigerian workers are acquiring AI skills significantly faster than local businesses are integrating these technologies into production processes.

Other African nations trailing South Africa include Egypt, Morocco, Kenya, and Nigeria, with enterprise adoption scores remaining below 50 across the continent except for South Africa.
