South Africa manages foot-and-mouth disease in wildlife and livestock

Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) has been confirmed in kudu at Addo Elephant National Park following diagnostic testing. In response, South African National Parks (SANParks) and the Eastern Cape Department of Agriculture have strengthened wildlife biosecurity measures and increased monitoring. Despite the confirmation, tourism operations at the park remain open under official disease-management precautions.

In Limpopo province, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development is conducting vaccination campaigns to protect livestock. In villages near Kruger National Park, such as Maphophe, animal health technicians are administering FMD booster shots to cattle belonging to small-scale farmers. These efforts include organized vaccination processes using crush pens to ensure animals receive necessary doses and, in some instances, tick dipping treatments.
