South Africa mass shootings kill at least 27 people
Two separate mass shootings in South Africa resulted in at least 27 deaths and dozens of injuries within a single night.
The first attack occurred at a tavern in Wedela, west of Johannesburg. Suspects armed with AK-47 rifles and pistols opened fire on patrons, killing 17 people—including four women—and injuring 15 others. Witnesses reported seeing eight individuals wearing balaclavas and jackets from Lesotho entering the establishment before the shooting began. Investigators are looking into potential links to illegal mining turf wars involving 'zama zamas' or business rivalries.
Hours later, a second shooting took place at a leisure venue near Cape Town in Lwandle. This attack left 10 people dead and 11 injured.
President Cyril Ramaphosa condemned the violence, stating, “This is the level of criminality that we must bring down,” and calling for intensified security efforts. South Africa continues to struggle with high rates of violent crime and illicit firearm proliferation despite government interventions.
