South Africa mine collapse kills 14 miners near Rustenburg

A soil collapse at a disused mining site near Nkaneng, an informal settlement outside Rustenburg, killed 14 miners on August 13. Most of the deceased are believed to be undocumented migrants. North West police commissioner Lieutenant-General Arthur Adams stated that more miners could potentially remain trapped underground.

The incident highlights a growing illegal underground economy centered on South Africa’s chrome wealth. While South Africa is the world’s largest chrome producer and exporter, supplying significant amounts to global industries like China’s stainless steel sector, unauthorized mining operations are expanding. These operations often involve vulnerable migrants, unemployed former miners, and criminal groups exploiting abandoned or inactive mine sites in the mineral-rich North West province.
