South Africa National Lottery introduces new PowerBall rules and pricing
Sizekhaya Holdings has taken over the South African National Lottery, implementing significant changes to the PowerBall game structure. Following the transition from the previous operator, Ithuba Holdings, on 1 June 2026, the game formerly known as PowerBall Plus has been rebranded as PowerBall Xtra.
Under the new rules, the cost of a PowerBall line has increased from R5 to R10, while the PowerBall Xtra add-on has risen from R2.50 to R5. To improve winning odds, the number range for the PowerBall has been reduced from 1–20 to 1–16, and the Lotto ball range has decreased from 58 to 52.
In the current draw cycle, a combined R65 million is available, with a R40 million PowerBall jackpot and a R25 million PowerBall Xtra jackpot. Due to Sizekhaya’s rules, if no one wins the PowerBall Xtra jackpot in the final draw of the month, the prize money cascades down to the next winning division instead of rolling over.
