South Africa observes Social Development and Transport Month

South Africa is observing October as both Social Development Month and Transport Month, highlighting distinct areas of social and economic focus.

In recognition of Social Development Month and the International Day of Older Persons, emphasis is being placed on protecting the rights and dignity of the elderly. Key challenges identified include elder abuse—encompassing physical, emotional, financial, and sexual abuse—as well as neglect, poverty, and social isolation. Efforts aim to foster inclusive communities that ensure older persons can access essential services and live with independence.

Simultaneously, Transport Month focuses on the critical role of reliable passenger transport in driving economic growth and business continuity. Reliable mobility is noted as essential for workforce attendance and supply-chain resilience, particularly in sectors like mining and agriculture. This focus follows data from the Road Traffic Management Corporation, which reported 146 fatalities in major long-distance bus crashes during 2024, underscoring the necessity for enhanced passenger safety and responsible decision-making in the transport sector.
