South Africa police intelligence chief shot ahead of corruption hearing

Major General Feroz Khan, the suspended deputy head of South Africa's Crime Intelligence, was shot and wounded on Sunday night in an affluent suburb of Johannesburg. The attack occurred just days before he was due to testify before the Madlanga Commission, a judicial inquiry probing corruption within the police service.

The South African Police Service has launched a high‑level investigation, led by the Gauteng Hawks, the Gauteng Crime Intelligence unit and the SAPS Detective Service, with the Political Killings Task Team also involved. Acting National Commissioner Lieutenant General Puleng Dimpane said the motive remains unclear and emphasized that any attempt to intimidate participants in the commission would be met with the full force of the law. Khan remains in hospital recovering after surgery.

Authorities have warned against speculation linking the shooting to the upcoming hearing, noting previous incidents of violence against witnesses in the commission's proceedings.
